Folate

Auch bekannt als: folic acid, vitamin B9, 5-MTHF

Folate (vitamin B9) is needed for cell division, DNA and blood formation and for converting homocysteine. Women planning a pregnancy are advised to take folic acid before conception to prevent neural tube defects in the baby.

Wofür es verwendet wird

  • Prevention of neural tube defects when taken before conception and in early pregnancy – strong evidence (WHO, EFSA)
  • Normal blood formation and reduced tiredness – strong evidence (EFSA)
  • Lowering homocysteine together with B6 and B12 – strong evidence, though the heart benefit is unclear

Formen und Unterschiede

folic acid

synthetic form with the most evidence in pregnancy

5-MTHF (methylfolate, active folate)

active form the body does not need to convert; a suitable alternative

folic acid with B12

sensible combination – folate can mask B12 deficiency

Wann einnehmen

Once daily, with or without food.

Passt gut zu

Vitamin B12, vitamin B6.

Nicht kombinieren / trennen

Do not take high-dose folic acid without checking your B12 level.

Worauf achten

If you take medicines (e.g. methotrexate, antiepileptics), folate can affect their action – consult your doctor. Discuss the dose in pregnancy and when planning it with your gynaecologist.

Sicherheit

EFSA set an upper limit of 1000 µg synthetic folic acid (or methylfolate) per day for adults; folate from food does not count.

Praxistipp

If you are planning a pregnancy, start folate at least one month before conception.
