Calcium

Auch bekannt als: Ca

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and the foundation of bones and teeth; it is also involved in muscle contraction and blood clotting. A supplement makes sense mainly when you do not get enough from food (dairy, mineral water, vegetables, legumes).

Wofür es verwendet wird

  • Maintenance of normal bones and teeth – strong evidence (EFSA)
  • Lower fracture risk in older people together with vitamin D – moderate evidence
  • Benefit when dietary intake is adequate – weak evidence

Formen und Unterschiede

citrate

absorbed even on an empty stomach, suitable with low stomach acid

carbonate

high calcium per tablet, take with food

lactate

well soluble but low calcium per gram

from seaweed (Lithothamnion), coral calcium

natural sources of calcium carbonate with other minerals; advantages over standard forms are not clearly shown

Wann einnehmen

With food, in doses of up to about 500 mg at a time (better absorbed).

Passt gut zu

Vitamin D, vitamin K2, magnesium.

Nicht kombinieren / trennen

Keep at least 2 hours apart from iron, zinc, thyroid medication, some antibiotics and bisphosphonates.

Worauf achten

Take care with kidney stones, kidney disease and high blood calcium. If you take medicines (especially for the heart, blood pressure, thyroid or antibiotics), consult your doctor.

Sicherheit

EFSA set an upper limit of 2500 mg calcium per day (food and supplements combined). Prefer getting it from food.

Praxistipp

First estimate how much calcium you get from food – often you only need to top up the difference.
