Matcha

Autres noms: powdered green tea

Matcha is finely ground green tea from shade-grown leaves that is consumed whole rather than steeped. It contains caffeine, L-theanine and catechins (mainly EGCG), so it is stimulating but usually calmer than coffee.

À quoi il sert

  • alertness and focus (caffeine + L-theanine) – moderate evidence
  • antioxidant catechins – moderate evidence for green tea in general
  • mild metabolic support – weak evidence, small effect

Les formes et leurs différences

ceremonial grade

milder taste, meant for drinking with water

culinary grade

stronger taste, for lattes and baking

capsules

no taste, but a smaller dose than a cup

Quand le prendre

Morning or late morning; not late afternoon because of caffeine.

Se combine bien avec

Water at about 70–80 °C, or milk or a plant drink.

Ne pas associer / espacer

Count total caffeine from coffee, energy drinks and pre-workouts. Do not drink it right with iron-rich meals or an iron supplement.

Points d’attention

Limit total caffeine during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you have high blood pressure, anxiety, heart-rhythm problems or liver disease, or take medicines (e.g. thyroid hormones, anticoagulants), consult your doctor.

Sécurité

EFSA considers up to 400 mg caffeine per day safe for healthy adults (200 mg in pregnancy); concentrated EGCG extracts at high doses may strain the liver. Do not exceed the label dose.

Conseil pratique

If coffee makes you jittery, try matcha in the morning – L-theanine smooths the caffeine onset.
