Isomalt

Group: Sweeteners

Harm level3 of 5In moderation

In plain words

Isomalt is a sugar alcohol made from sugar, about half as sweet and with fewer calories. You find it in sugar-free sweets, chewing gum and chocolate.

Where you find it: sugar-free candies, cake decorations

Our recommendation

Limit it; be careful if you have a sensitive gut.

Possible risks and effects

  • Bloating, wind and diarrhoea in larger amounts.
  • Children and people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are more sensitive.

For experts

Isomalt is a mixture of two polyols obtained by enzymatic conversion of sucrose followed by hydrogenation. It is only partly absorbed in the small intestine, so it has a low glycaemic impact and does not cause tooth decay; the rest is fermented in the colon. No numerical ADI is set; in the EU products with more than 10% added polyols must carry a warning about possible laxative effects.
