Our recommendation

Limit it; people with IBS and children in particular should be careful.

Possible risks and effects

  • Bloating, flatulence and diarrhoea in larger amounts
  • People with IBS (FODMAP) and children are more sensitive

For experts

A polyol naturally present in mushrooms and some vegetables, industrially made by hydrogenating fructose or by fermentation; sweetener, anti-caking agent and bulking agent. It is poorly absorbed and therefore osmotically laxative, carrying the same mandatory EU warning as other polyols. Its medical use as an osmotic diuretic illustrates its strong osmotic action.
