Dopamine — the hormone of motivation, not just pleasure

Dopamine is not the pleasure hormone. It is the hormone of anticipation, seeking and motivation. And the modern world systematically drains it before you can use it for anything meaningful.

Dopamine is a monoamine neurotransmitter synthesised from tyrosine via L-DOPA. It is produced mainly by groups of neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the substantia nigra. The dopamine pathways — mesolimbic (reward), mesocortical (executive function) and nigrostriatal (motor control) — regulate motivation, learning, movement and executive functions.

Anticipation, not consumption

Kent Berridge (Michigan) showed that dopamine drives “wanting”, not “liking”. Consuming a reward is linked to serotonin and endorphins — not dopamine. Dopamine drives you to seek — and once you find, it quickly returns to baseline. That is why we are never satisfied with our achievements for long.

Dopamine — how it works

Dopamine neurons encode the “reward prediction error” — the difference between the expected and the actual reward. When you get more than you expected → a dopamine spike (learning). When you get less than you expected → a dip below baseline (frustration, avoidance learning). This is the mechanism behind addiction, learning and motivation alike.

Dopamine deficiency — the symptoms

Anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure), loss of motivation, procrastination, fatigue with no physical cause, ADHD-like symptoms, depression, cravings for carbohydrates/stimulants. Long-term deficiency → Parkinson’s disease (loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra). Short-term functional deficiency → burnout, chronic lack of motivation.

Dopamine addiction — a modern problem

Social media, video games, pornography, gambling — all of them exploit variable ratio reinforcement, the most effective form of conditioning. Every scroll may bring a reward (a like, new content) — or it may not. This unpredictability generates maximum dopamine release. The result: receptor desensitisation → we need stronger stimuli for the same effect → everyday reality becomes boring.

Dopamine detox: 24–72 hours without stimuli (social media, YouTube, news, alcohol, sugar). The goal: to reset receptor sensitivity. Not “boredom” — but space to rediscover natural sources of dopamine (creating, movement, human connection).

How to restore dopamine sensitivity

Tyrosine (an amino acid) — a dopamine precursor, 500–2000 mg in the morning. L-theanine + caffeine — a synergistic combination for focus without anxiety. Mucuna pruriens (a source of L-DOPA). Physical activity — a powerful dopamine release without desensitisation. Cold showers — activate the dopaminergic pathways. Cold exposure raises dopamine by 250%, and the effect lasts 3–4 hours. Cut back on low-value stimuli (social media, scrolling) — and rediscover your motivation for long-term goals.
