Biohacking is a discipline built on two principles. First: a systems view — the body isn't a collection of organs, it's an interconnected network. Second: personal responsibility — you aren't a passive heir to your genes, you are the active creator of which genes get switched on.
How to read the numbers: Fact = a finding from research or biology · How-to = a practical step or time frame
Sleep·Nutrition·Movement·Stress
Sleep, nutrition, exercise, light and stress management are the foundations with the strongest evidence, and they influence one another. Before reaching for supplements or gadgets, improve the weakest of these five pillars.
You are your own experiment
N=1 means different people can respond differently to the same change, so you test the effect on yourself – though the result does not replace findings from large studies. Before making a change, decide what you will measure and evaluate it after a few weeks.
Biomarkers vs. feelings
Feelings matter, but they are easily swayed by mood or expectation, while biomarkers such as blood tests, blood pressure or resting heart rate give a more objective picture. A combination works best: note how you feel and check it regularly with measurements.
Five core pillars
Sleep: The foundation of everything. Without enough sleep, no other optimisation works to its full potential.
Nutrition: Not calories — information. Every meal is a signal for your hormones and gene expression.
Movement: Not training — a biological signal. Daily movement changes gene expression.
Light: The primary synchroniser of your circadian rhythm. Morning sun and evening darkness.
Stress: Managing cortisol, breathwork, social connection.
A small dose of stress strengthens — a large one destroys. This is called hormesis. Exercise, fasting, cold, sauna — all are forms of controlled stress that make the body stronger through adaptation.
Where to start
Biohacking only feels overwhelming to those who try to do everything at once. The right start: one pillar, one month, measure the result. Then the next. The system is built step by step.
