Our recommendation

Best avoided in future, especially for children and pregnant women.

Possible risks and effects

  • Gut formation of cyclohexylamine in some people.
  • Testicular toxicity in animal studies.
  • Children can easily exceed the low daily limit.

For experts

Cyclamate (cyclamic acid and its sodium or calcium salts) is converted by gut bacteria in some people into cyclohexylamine, which damaged the testes in animal studies. It has been banned in the USA since 1970; in the EU it is authorised with a relatively low ADI of 7 mg/kg body weight and restricted maximum levels, which the EU lowered in 2004.
