Quinoline yellow

Group: Colours · in the book

Harm level4 of 5Better avoid

In plain words

Quinoline yellow is an artificial greenish-yellow dye. It is used in some sweets, drinks, desserts and smoked fish.

Where you find it: confectionery, effervescent tablets, soft drinks

Our recommendation

Best avoided in future, especially in foods for children.

Possible risks and effects

  • Possible effect on activity and attention in children.
  • Rare allergic skin reactions.

For experts

A synthetic quinophthalone dye – not chemically an azo dye, but one of the "Southampton six". EFSA markedly lowered its ADI in 2009, and it is not permitted in food in the USA. In the EU, labels must state "may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children".
