Glucosamine

Autres noms: glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine HCl

Glucosamine is an amino sugar the body uses to build cartilage and joint fluid; in supplements it is made from shellfish shells or by fermentation. It is used mainly for knee osteoarthritis, but study results are mixed.

À quoi il sert

  • Pain relief in knee osteoarthritis – weak evidence, best results with crystalline glucosamine sulfate
  • Slower cartilage loss – weak evidence

Les formes et leurs différences

glucosamine sulfate (2KCl / NaCl)

most studied, stabilised with salt

glucosamine HCl

more concentrated but weaker evidence

vegetarian glucosamine

from corn fermentation, suitable with shellfish allergy

glucosamine + chondroitin

a common combination, quality depends on the label

Quand le prendre

With food, daily and long term; any effect usually appears after 4–8 weeks.

Se combine bien avec

Chondroitin, exercise and thigh strengthening, keeping a healthy weight.

Ne pas associer / espacer

Be careful with warfarin and other anticoagulants (possible increased effect).

Points d’attention

With shellfish allergy choose the vegetarian form. With diabetes, asthma, in pregnancy, with kidney or liver disease and when taking medicines (especially anticoagulants), consult your doctor. Salt forms contain sodium or potassium.

Sécurité

Do not exceed the label dose.

Conseil pratique

If you feel no improvement after 3 months, continuing probably makes little sense.
