White kidney bean extract

Also known as: Phaseolus vulgaris, starch blocker, alpha-amylase inhibitor

White kidney bean extract contains compounds that partly inhibit alpha-amylase, the enzyme that breaks down starch. Some starch from a meal may therefore go undigested, which is why it is sold as a "carb blocker".

What it is used for

  • Modest weight loss – weak evidence, the effect is small
  • Lower blood glucose rise after a starchy meal – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

standardised extract

check the amylase-inhibiting activity if stated

combined fat burners

often with chromium or glucomannan, quality depends on the label

When to take it

Just before a starch-rich meal (bread, pasta, rice).

Pairs well with

A diet with fewer processed carbohydrates, enough protein and fibre.

Do not combine / separate

Pointless with meals without starch; be careful with diabetes medicines.

Watch out for

It may cause bloating and gas. In pregnancy, while breastfeeding, with diabetes, kidney or liver disease and when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Rather than blocking starch, it works better to reduce the portion and add vegetables and protein.
