Lactitol

Group: Sweeteners

Harm level3 of 5In moderation

In plain words

Lactitol is a sugar alcohol made from milk sugar, about half as sweet as sugar. You find it in sugar-free confectionery, chocolate, ice cream and baked goods.

Where you find it: sugar-free sweets, ice cream

Our recommendation

Limit it; be careful if you have a sensitive gut.

Possible risks and effects

  • Bloating, wind and diarrhoea in larger amounts.
  • Children and people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are more sensitive.

For experts

Lactitol is produced by catalytic hydrogenation of lactose; it is barely absorbed in the small intestine and is fermented in the colon, giving it a low energy value and minimal glycaemic impact. Because of its marked osmotic effect it is also used as a laxative. No numerical ADI is set; in the EU a laxative warning is mandatory when added polyols exceed 10%.
