Group: Other · in the book

Harm level3 of 5In moderation

In plain words

Dimethylpolysiloxane is a silicone oil that prevents foaming during production and frying. You find it in fast-food frying oils, juices, syrups and some drinks.

Where you find it: frying oils, fast food, instant soups

Our recommendation

We recommend limiting the foods it appears in, especially fast-food fried items.

Possible risks and effects

  • The substance itself is not shown to be harmful at normal intake.
  • It is a typical marker of industrial frying and ultra-processed foods.

For experts

A synthetic linear silicone polymer that lowers surface tension as an antifoaming agent and is also used in small amounts as an anti-caking agent. It is hardly absorbed and is excreted unchanged; EFSA re-evaluated it in 2020 and saw no safety concern at permitted uses.
