Sodium aluminium silicate

Group: Other

Harm level3 of 5In moderation

In plain words

Sodium aluminium silicate is an anti-caking powder that contains aluminium. In the EU its use is now limited to a few foods, such as certain cheeses and food supplements.

Where you find it: salt, powdered mixes

Our recommendation

We recommend limiting it; children and people with kidney disease should be more careful.

Possible risks and effects

  • Adds to total aluminium intake, which at high exposure may affect the nervous system and bones.
  • Children and people with kidney disease are more vulnerable.

For experts

A synthetic silicate of sodium and aluminium used as an anti-caking agent. Because of concern about total aluminium intake (EFSA set a tolerable weekly intake of 1 mg/kg body weight in 2008), the EU sharply narrowed the permitted uses of aluminium-containing additives from 2012.
