Vitamin D2

Also known as: ergocalciferol

Vitamin D2 is the plant form of vitamin D, mainly obtained from UV-exposed mushrooms and yeast. It has the same role as D3 but raises and maintains blood vitamin D levels less effectively.

What it is used for

  • Prevention and treatment of vitamin D deficiency – strong evidence, though less effective than D3
  • Maintenance of normal bones and immunity – strong evidence (EFSA, for vitamin D)

Forms and how they differ

ergocalciferol

vegan form from mushrooms or yeast

lichen-derived D3

vegan alternative that is usually more effective

When to take it

Once daily with a meal containing fat.

Pairs well with

Vitamin K2, magnesium.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with other vitamin D products without adding up the total dose.

Watch out for

Take care with kidney disease, sarcoidosis and high blood calcium. If you take medicines or are pregnant, consult your doctor.

Safety

EFSA set an upper limit of 100 µg (4000 IU) vitamin D per day for adults.

Practical tip

If you eat vegan, consider lichen-derived D3 instead – it keeps levels more stable.
