Choline

Also known as: CDP-choline, citicoline

Choline is a vitamin-like nutrient needed for acetylcholine, cell membranes and liver function. It is found mainly in eggs, liver and meat.

What it is used for

  • Normal liver function and homocysteine metabolism (EFSA-authorised claims) – strong evidence
  • Memory and focus with citicoline – weak to moderate evidence
  • Baby's brain development in pregnancy – moderate evidence

Forms and how they differ

choline bitartrate

cheap, lower choline content per gram

CDP-choline (citicoline)

used for brain support, also provides cytidine

alpha-GPC

high choline content, aimed at cognitive performance

choline + inositol

common combination; evidence for an added effect is weak

When to take it

In the morning or during the day with food.

Pairs well with

Works well with folate, B12 and omega-3.

Do not combine / separate

Do not stack high doses with other choline products without checking the total.

Watch out for

Choline matters in pregnancy – discuss the dose with your doctor. If you have kidney or liver disease, Parkinson's disease or take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

High doses can cause fishy body odour, digestive upset or a drop in blood pressure. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

If you eat eggs regularly you usually get enough choline – consider a supplement mainly on a plant-based diet.
