Brewer's yeast

Also known as: Saccharomyces cerevisiae, inactive yeast

Brewer's yeast is inactivated Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast that provides B vitamins, protein, chromium and selenium. It is traditionally used for hair, nails and skin, but evidence for these effects is weak.

What it is used for

  • supplying B vitamins – mainly useful with a poor diet; content depends on the product
  • hair, nails and skin – weak evidence
  • blood sugar support (via chromium) – weak evidence, small studies

Forms and how they differ

tablets

convenient, nutrient dose is fairly low

powder or flakes

can be added to food; more nutrients per serving

fortified yeast (e.g. with B12, zinc, selenium)

composition depends on the label; unfortified yeast is not a reliable B12 source

When to take it

With food, any time of day.

Pairs well with

A varied diet, protein, zinc.

Do not combine / separate

Avoid it if you take MAOI antidepressants (tyramine content). Take care when combining with diabetes medicines.

Watch out for

Not suitable with yeast allergy, Crohn's disease or weakened immunity. With gout (purines), diabetes, in pregnancy or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Usually well tolerated; may cause bloating. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

If you take it for hair, give it at least 2–3 months and have your iron and thyroid checked as well.
