Biotin

Also known as: vitamin B7, vitamin H

Biotin is a B vitamin involved in fat, carbohydrate and protein metabolism and in maintaining healthy hair and skin. True deficiency is rare, and in people without it a supplement does not visibly improve hair or nails.

What it is used for

  • Maintenance of normal hair and skin – strong evidence for the basic role (EFSA)
  • Better hair and nails with proven deficiency – moderate evidence
  • Hair growth and stronger nails without deficiency – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

D-biotin

standard form, in doses from 50 µg to several mg

biotin with selenium and zinc

common hair combination; add up doses with other supplements

When to take it

With food, any time of day.

Pairs well with

Zinc, selenium, enough protein.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine several high-dose biotin products.

Watch out for

High-dose biotin can distort laboratory tests (e.g. thyroid hormones, troponin). Before a blood test tell your doctor you take biotin and pause it for a few days as advised. In pregnancy and if you take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

EFSA has not set an upper limit; do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

With hair loss, first have ferritin, thyroid and vitamin D checked – they are more common causes than biotin.
