Vitamin B1

Also known as: thiamine

Vitamin B1 is needed to turn carbohydrates into energy and for normal nerve and heart function. Deficiency is mainly a risk with heavy alcohol use, long-term diuretic use, after bariatric surgery and with very restricted diets.

What it is used for

  • Normal energy metabolism and nervous system function – strong evidence (EFSA)
  • Treatment of deficiency (e.g. with heavy drinking) – strong evidence, under medical care
  • More energy without deficiency – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

thiamine hydrochloride or mononitrate

standard forms

benfotiamine

fat-soluble derivative with better absorption; studied in diabetic neuropathy

When to take it

In the morning or during the day with food.

Pairs well with

Other B vitamins, magnesium.

Do not combine / separate

Coffee, black tea and alcohol may reduce absorption – keep a gap.

Watch out for

If you take medicines (e.g. diuretics) or are pregnant, consult your doctor.

Safety

EFSA has not set an upper limit – excess is excreted in urine. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Whole grains, legumes, pork and sunflower seeds are good natural sources of B1.
