Saffron

Also known as: saffron extract

Saffron is a spice from the stigmas of Crocus sativus; extracts are standardised for compounds such as crocin and safranal. It is one of the better-studied herbs for mild low mood.

What it is used for

  • Mild low mood – moderate evidence from smaller studies
  • PMS symptoms – weak to moderate evidence
  • Sleep and vision – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

standardised extract

low-dose capsules, most studied form

saffron as a spice

safe in cooking; a regular dose is needed for an effect

When to take it

Once a day, regularly for 6–8 weeks.

Pairs well with

Works well with omega-3 and vitamin D.

Do not combine / separate

Use caution with antidepressants, blood pressure medicines and blood thinners.

Watch out for

High doses are unsuitable in pregnancy (may trigger uterine contractions) and breastfeeding. If you have bipolar disorder, liver or kidney disease or take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Well tolerated at usual extract doses; high doses (grams) are toxic. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

If low mood lasts, seek professional help – the supplement does not replace treatment.
