Inositol

Also known as: myo-inositol, D-chiro-inositol

Inositol is a vitamin-like compound involved in insulin signalling and some neurotransmitters. It is studied most in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

What it is used for

  • Menstrual cycle and insulin sensitivity in PCOS – moderate evidence
  • Fertility in PCOS – weak to moderate evidence
  • Anxiety and mood – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

myo-inositol

best-studied form, usually in gram doses

myo- + D-chiro-inositol (40:1)

combination mimicking the body's ratio, common for PCOS

inositol in choline complexes

the dose is often low – check the label

When to take it

Usually split morning and evening; dissolve the powder in water.

Pairs well with

Works well with folate and vitamin D.

Do not combine / separate

If you take diabetes medicines, monitor blood glucose – effects may add up.

Watch out for

In pregnancy only after consulting your doctor. If you have diabetes, bipolar disorder, kidney or liver disease or take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Well tolerated at usual doses; higher doses may cause bloating or loose stools. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

In PCOS the effect is judged after 3 months of regular use – not after a few days.
