Beta-sitosterol

Also known as: plant sterol, phytosterol

Beta-sitosterol is the most common plant sterol, found in nuts, seeds and vegetable oils. It is used for urinary symptoms with an enlarged prostate and as part of sterols that lower LDL cholesterol.

What it is used for

  • urinary symptoms with an enlarged prostate – moderate evidence (improved symptoms and urine flow in older reviews; does not shrink the prostate)
  • lowering LDL cholesterol – strong evidence for plant sterols as a group (EFSA-approved claim at 1.5–3 g sterols a day with food)

Forms and how they differ

beta-sitosterol capsules

used for the prostate

plant sterol / stanol mix

used for LDL, often in fortified foods

combinations with saw palmetto

quality depends on the label

When to take it

With a meal containing fat, split over the day.

Pairs well with

Saw palmetto, pumpkin seed; a fibre-rich diet.

Do not combine / separate

May reduce absorption of carotenoids – eat plenty of colourful vegetables.

Watch out for

Not suitable with the rare inherited condition sitosterolaemia. With cholesterol medicines, during pregnancy or with illness consult your doctor; with urinary problems see a doctor first.

Safety

Generally well tolerated; occasional stomach upset. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

For LDL you need gram doses – the small amounts in prostate capsules are not enough for cholesterol.
