Vitamin C or a meal rich in vitamin C.
Keep at least 2 hours apart from calcium, magnesium, zinc, coffee, tea, dairy, some antibiotics and thyroid medication.
Take iron only after deficiency is confirmed by a blood test (ferritin, blood count) – excess is harmful. With haemochromatosis, liver or bowel disease and in pregnancy, follow your doctor's advice.
Do not exceed the label dose; higher doses only under medical supervision. Keep iron supplements away from children – overdose is dangerous for them.
After 2–3 months have your ferritin rechecked to know whether you still need to supplement.
