Chromium

Also known as: Cr

Chromium is a trace element involved in macronutrient metabolism and the maintenance of normal blood sugar. True deficiency is rare and the benefit of supplements in healthy people is small.

What it is used for

  • Maintenance of normal blood glucose – EFSA-approved claim, but the clinical benefit of supplements is small
  • Improved glucose control in type 2 diabetes – weak, inconsistent evidence
  • Weight loss and fewer sugar cravings – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

picolinate

the most studied and well absorbed form

chloride

inorganic form, poorly absorbed

chromium yeast

organic form bound in yeast

When to take it

With food, usually with the main meal of the day.

Pairs well with

A balanced diet with enough fibre and protein.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with other blood-sugar supplements without consulting your doctor.

Watch out for

If you take diabetes medicines (including insulin and metformin), chromium may add to lowering blood sugar – consult your doctor. Take care with kidney or liver disease and in pregnancy.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

For sugar cravings, regular meals with protein often help more than chromium alone.
