Vitamin B5

Also known as: pantothenic acid, pantethine

Vitamin B5 is part of coenzyme A, which is key for fat metabolism and the production of energy and stress hormones. It is found in almost all foods, so deficiency is very rare.

What it is used for

  • Normal energy metabolism and mental performance – strong evidence for the basic role (EFSA)
  • Pantethine for modestly lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides – weak to moderate evidence from smaller studies
  • Acne and stress management – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

calcium or sodium D-pantothenate

standard forms in multivitamins

pantethine

active form studied for blood lipids, at higher doses

When to take it

With food.

Pairs well with

Other B vitamins.

Do not combine / separate

No significant interactions with supplements.

Watch out for

If you use pantethine for cholesterol and also take lipid-lowering or blood-thinning medicines, consult your doctor. In pregnancy only after agreeing with your doctor.

Safety

EFSA has not set an upper limit; high doses may cause diarrhoea. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

A varied diet covers everyday B5 needs – a separate supplement only makes sense for targeted pantethine use.
