Policosanol

Also known as: octacosanol, sugar cane alcohols, plant waxes

Policosanol is a mixture of long-chain alcohols from sugar cane wax, beeswax or rice. Original studies from a single source showed lower cholesterol, but independent studies have mostly not confirmed this.

What it is used for

  • LDL cholesterol reduction – weak evidence, independent studies show no effect
  • Endurance support – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

quality depends on the label

When to take it

In the evening with food.

Pairs well with

A fibre-rich diet (psyllium, oats), exercise, omega-3.

Do not combine / separate

Be careful with anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines (it may slightly reduce clotting).

Watch out for

With bleeding disorders, before surgery, in pregnancy, with kidney or liver disease and when taking medicines, consult your doctor. With high cholesterol it does not replace treatment.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

For LDL, soluble fibre such as psyllium or oat beta-glucans has much better evidence.
