Fenugreek

Also known as: Trigonella foenum-graecum

Fenugreek is a legume whose seeds are rich in soluble fibre (galactomannan) and saponins. It is studied for blood sugar, libido and testosterone in men, and traditionally used for milk supply in breastfeeding women.

What it is used for

  • blood sugar support – weak to moderate evidence, mainly for larger seed doses
  • libido and testosterone in men – weak evidence, results are mixed
  • breast milk supply – weak evidence, mainly traditional use

Forms and how they differ

ground seeds

most fibre, suitable for cooking

standardised extract

for saponins (furostanols), studied for libido

tincture

contains alcohol, lower dose of actives

When to take it

With food; for blood sugar, ideally with main meals.

Pairs well with

A low glycaemic load diet, exercise and strength training.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with diabetes medicines or blood thinners without asking your doctor; the fibre may slow absorption of medicines – keep at least 2 hours apart.

Watch out for

Higher doses are not recommended during pregnancy (may trigger uterine contractions). If you are allergic to peanuts, chickpeas or other legumes, cross-allergy is possible. If you have diabetes, liver disease or take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose; bloating, diarrhoea and a maple-syrup-like smell of sweat and urine are possible.

Practical tip

Add ground seeds to curries, legumes or baking – a cheap form with the most fibre.
