Oregano oil

Also known as: oil of oregano, carvacrol

Oregano oil is a concentrated essential oil from oregano, high in carvacrol and thymol. In the lab it acts against bacteria and fungi, but clinical evidence in humans is very limited.

What it is used for

  • antimicrobial effect – weak evidence, mostly lab studies
  • gut bacterial overgrowth and parasites – weak evidence from small studies
  • support during colds – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

oil capsules (% carvacrol)

diluted in a carrier oil; carvacrol content usually 60–80%

enteric-coated capsules

released in the gut, less burping and burning

liquid oil

always dilute, never drink undiluted

When to take it

With food, short-term (a few days to weeks).

Pairs well with

Probiotics, a few hours apart.

Do not combine / separate

It may reduce iron absorption – take it at a different time. Do not combine with blood thinners without asking your doctor.

Watch out for

Not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding or for small children. Avoid if allergic to mint-family plants (basil, thyme, lavender). With diabetes medicines or blood thinners consult your doctor.

Safety

Undiluted oil irritates mucous membranes and skin. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Apply it to the skin only diluted in a carrier oil, and patch-test first.
