Manganese

Also known as: Mn

Manganese is a trace element needed for connective tissue and bone formation and for the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. A normal diet with whole grains, nuts, legumes and tea provides plenty, so deficiency is rare.

What it is used for

  • Maintenance of normal bones and connective tissue formation – EFSA-approved claims for the basic role
  • Protection of cells from oxidative stress – EFSA-approved claim for the basic role
  • Benefit of a supplement on a normal diet – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

bisglycinate

well tolerated chelated form

citrate, gluconate, sulphate

common forms in multimineral products

When to take it

With food.

Pairs well with

Often part of joint and bone formulas with calcium, zinc and copper.

Do not combine / separate

Keep apart from iron – they compete for absorption.

Watch out for

Take care with liver disease (manganese is excreted in bile) and in pregnancy; if you take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose; high manganese intake can be toxic to the nervous system.

Practical tip

If you drink tea and eat whole grains, you usually do not need a separate manganese supplement.
