Turmeric

Also known as: curcumin, Curcuma longa

Turmeric is the root of Curcuma longa, and its main active compound is curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin on its own is very poorly absorbed, so the form matters.

What it is used for

  • Joint pain in osteoarthritis – moderate evidence
  • Lower inflammatory markers – limited to moderate evidence
  • Digestive complaints – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

curcumin with piperine

black pepper piperine increases absorption

phospholipid, micellar or colloidal forms

better absorption without piperine

root powder

spice, low curcumin content

softgel with oil

fat supports absorption

When to take it

With a meal containing fat.

Pairs well with

Black pepper, omega-3, vitamin E.

Do not combine / separate

High doses combined with blood thinners.

Watch out for

If you have gallstones or liver disease, are pregnant, or take blood thinners, diabetes medicines or medicines metabolised by the liver, consult your doctor. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with highly absorbable forms.

Safety

EFSA set an acceptable daily intake for curcumin of 3 mg per kg of body weight; do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

In cooking, always pair turmeric with fat and a pinch of black pepper.
