Astaxanthin

Also known as: Haematococcus pluvialis, algae carotenoid

Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis that gives salmon and shrimp their colour. It is a strong antioxidant in the laboratory, but evidence of benefits in humans is still limited.

What it is used for

  • Skin protection from UV and skin moisture – weak evidence
  • Eye fatigue from screen work – weak evidence
  • Recovery after exercise – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

natural astaxanthin from algae

the most common form, in oil capsules

synthetic astaxanthin

used mainly in feed, rare in supplements

When to take it

With a meal containing fat, for example at breakfast or lunch.

Pairs well with

Omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, sun protection.

Do not combine / separate

Be careful with anticoagulants and blood-pressure medicines (theoretical additive effect).

Watch out for

Not well studied in pregnancy and breastfeeding. With kidney, liver or hormonal disease and when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Take it with a meal that contains fat – without it absorption is very poor.
