Ergothioneine

Also known as: L-ergothioneine, mushroom antioxidant

Ergothioneine is an amino-acid antioxidant made by fungi and some bacteria that the human body cannot produce. The body nevertheless absorbs it actively via its own transporter and stores it in tissues, which has led to hypotheses about a protective role.

What it is used for

  • Antioxidant protection of cells – weak evidence, data mainly from laboratory and animal studies
  • Association with slower cognitive ageing – weak evidence, observational studies only
