Coenzyme Q10

Also known as: CoQ10, ubiquinone, ubiquinol

Coenzyme Q10 is a compound the body makes itself; it is essential for energy production in the mitochondria and acts as an antioxidant. Its levels decline with age and with statin use.

What it is used for

  • Add-on support in heart failure – moderate evidence (under medical supervision)
  • Fewer migraine attacks – weak to moderate evidence
  • Muscle complaints with statins – weak evidence, results are mixed
  • Energy and fatigue in healthy people – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

ubiquinone

oxidised form, most studied, cheaper

ubiquinol

reduced form, claimed to be better absorbed in older people

dissolved in oil / softgel

absorbed better than dry powder

When to take it

With a meal containing fat, in the morning or at lunch (in some people it disturbs sleep in the evening).

Pairs well with

Omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, vitamin E.

Do not combine / separate

Be careful with warfarin (it may reduce its effect) and with blood-pressure and diabetes medicines.

Watch out for

If you take anticoagulants, blood-pressure or diabetes medicines or chemotherapy, consult your doctor; also in pregnancy and with kidney or liver disease. With heart disease, never use it instead of prescribed treatment.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose; it is usually well tolerated, occasionally causing digestive upset.

Practical tip

If you take a statin and have muscle pain, tell your doctor – you may try Q10, but not as a substitute for an examination.
