Hemp protein

Also known as: hemp seed protein

Hemp protein is made from pressed industrial hemp seeds and provides protein, fibre and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Its protein content is lower (usually around 50%) and it contains no relevant amount of psychoactive THC.

What it is used for

  • protein and fibre top-up on a plant-based diet – weak evidence
  • digestive support from fibre – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

50% powder

more fibre, earthy taste

70% concentrate

more protein, less fibre

When to take it

With food, in smoothies or porridge.

Pairs well with

Fruit, bananas, cocoa; pea protein to raise the protein content.

Do not combine / separate

With sensitive digestion start with a smaller amount because of the high fibre.

Watch out for

Athletes should choose THC-tested products. With kidney or liver disease, discuss higher protein intake with your doctor. In pregnancy, consult your doctor.

Safety

Safe for healthy people within normal total protein intake; do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

It is more a nutritious food than a pure protein – good in breakfasts.
