Amino acid complex

Also known as: amino acids, EAA tablets

Amino acid complexes contain a mix of amino acids, often from hydrolysed whey or beef collagen. The composition and essential amino acid content vary widely, so quality depends on the label.

What it is used for

  • Topping up protein when intake is low – moderate evidence
  • Recovery and muscle growth when dietary protein is adequate – weak evidence
  • Performance during training – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

whey tablets

whey hydrolysate, good essential amino acid profile

beef amino acids

often from collagen – less leucine and fewer essential amino acids

EAA / BCAA powder

precisely defined free amino acids

When to take it

Around training or between meals low in protein.

Pairs well with

Works well with creatine and carbohydrates after training.

Do not combine / separate

It does not replace a proper meal or protein powder – per gram of protein it is usually more expensive.

Watch out for

In pregnancy and breastfeeding only after consulting your doctor. If you have kidney or liver disease, phenylketonuria or take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Well tolerated at usual doses. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Work out how many grams of protein one serving gives you – it is often less than you would expect.
