Chia protein

Also known as: chia seed protein

Chia protein is defatted chia seed flour with a protein content usually around 40–55% and a large share of fibre. Part of the omega-3 (ALA) is removed during defatting.

What it is used for

  • protein top-up on a plant-based diet – weak evidence, few studies on this protein specifically
  • digestive support from fibre – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

defatted powder

high fibre, swells

whole seeds

more fat including ALA, less protein

When to take it

With meals or between meals, e.g. in smoothies, porridge or baking.

Pairs well with

Yoghurt, porridge, smoothies; plenty of water.

Do not combine / separate

Drink enough fluids with it; with sensitive digestion start with a small serving.

Watch out for

If you have swallowing difficulties or take blood-thinning or blood-pressure medicines, consult your doctor. With kidney or liver disease, discuss higher protein intake with your doctor.

Safety

Safe for healthy people within normal total protein intake; do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Because of its high fibre it suits breakfast rather than right before training.
