Hydroxytyrosol

Also known as: olive polyphenols, olive extract

Hydroxytyrosol is a polyphenol from olives and extra virgin olive oil and one of the most potent natural antioxidants known. EFSA has approved a claim for olive oil polyphenols on protecting LDL lipids from oxidation.

What it is used for

  • Protection of LDL cholesterol from oxidation – moderate evidence for polyphenols in olive oil (EFSA-approved claim), weaker for capsules
  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects – weak evidence
