EAA – essential amino acids

Also known as: 9 essential amino acids

A mix of the nine amino acids the body cannot make and must get from food. Unlike BCAAs, it supplies all the building blocks needed for muscle protein synthesis.

What it is used for

  • Stimulating muscle protein synthesis – moderate evidence
  • Muscle support in older adults and with low protein intake – moderate evidence
  • Advantage over adequate high-quality dietary protein – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

9-EAA powder

composition and leucine share vary, read the label; often flavoured and sweetened

tablets and capsules

lower dose per piece

When to take it

Before, during or after training, or between low-protein meals.

Pairs well with

Training; carbohydrates during long endurance sessions.

Do not combine / separate

No need to add BCAAs – EAAs already contain them.

Watch out for

Caution with kidney or liver disease and inherited amino acid disorders (e.g. phenylketonuria). Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney or liver disease or take any medicines.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip
