Chlorella

Also known as: Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, green algae

Chlorella is a single-celled green alga rich in protein, chlorophyll, iron and vitamin K. It is sold as a "detox" and superfood, but good evidence of benefits in humans is limited.

What it is used for

  • Modest improvement in blood lipids and blood pressure – weak evidence
  • Immune support – weak evidence
  • Heavy-metal detoxification – no evidence in humans
  • Vitamin B12 – content varies greatly between products

Forms and how they differ

broken cell wall tablets

the cell wall is otherwise hard to digest

organic chlorella

also check heavy-metal testing and origin

When to take it

In the morning or during the day with food; start with a low dose.

Pairs well with

Vitamin C, a varied plant-based diet.

Do not combine / separate

It contains vitamin K – with warfarin and other vitamin K antagonists it may reduce their effect; be careful with immunosuppressants.

Watch out for

If you take anticoagulants, have autoimmune disease, iodine or mould allergy, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney or liver disease or take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose. At first it may cause bloating, green stools or sensitivity to sunlight.

Practical tip

Choose products with a stated origin and a laboratory test for heavy metals.
