Shark cartilage

Also known as: cartilage from sharks

Shark cartilage is dried, powdered cartilage from sharks that naturally contains chondroitin sulfate, collagen and minerals. It is sold mainly for joint support, but convincing human evidence of benefit is lacking.

What it is used for

  • joint support – very weak evidence, any effect is attributed to chondroitin
  • anti-cancer claims – clinical trials did not confirm a benefit

Forms and how they differ

powder in capsules

chondroitin content varies between products and is often not stated

isolated chondroitin sulfate

a better standardised alternative

When to take it

With food, at the same time each day.

Pairs well with

Movement, weight management and a balanced diet with enough protein.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with other chondroitin joint products without checking the total dose.

Watch out for

Not recommended if you are allergic to fish or seafood, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you take blood thinners or have kidney or liver disease, consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose; long-term use may cause digestive upset.

Practical tip

For joint support, standardised chondroitin or glucosamine has more data – and consider the sustainability of shark fishing.
