Zeolite (clinoptilolite)

Also known as: clinoptilolite, activated zeolite

Zeolite is a porous volcanic mineral that can bind certain substances and ions. It is sold for "detox", but a benefit from routine use in healthy people has not been convincingly shown.

What it is used for

  • binding toxins and heavy metals in the gut – weak evidence in humans
  • digestive complaints and diarrhoea – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

micronised powder

the most common form; purity and heavy-metal analysis matter

combination with activated charcoal

both also bind medicines and nutrients – quality depends on the label

When to take it

Between meals with a large glass of water, short-term.

Pairs well with

Plenty of fluids; a fibre-rich diet.

Do not combine / separate

Take medicines, vitamins and minerals at least 2–3 hours apart – zeolite may bind them.

Watch out for

Not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, for children or with kidney disease. If you take medicines (especially the contraceptive pill and medicines with a narrow therapeutic range), consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not inhale the powder. Poor-quality products may contain heavy metals. Do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

Choose only a product with heavy-metal testing and use it short-term only.
