SAMe

Also known as: S-adenosylmethionine, ademetionine

SAMe is a compound the body makes from the amino acid methionine; it donates methyl groups for hundreds of reactions, including neurotransmitter production. In some countries it is also used as a medicine.

What it is used for

  • low mood and depressive symptoms – moderate evidence, mainly as an add-on to treatment under medical supervision
  • osteoarthritis joint pain – moderate evidence, effect similar to common pain relievers but slower onset
  • liver support in cholestasis – weak to moderate evidence, in medical use

Forms and how they differ

SAMe tosylate (disulfate tosylate)

stable form; choose enteric-coated tablets in blisters

SAMe butanedisulfonate

another stable form, equally sensitive to moisture

When to take it

In the morning on an empty stomach or as the label says; in the evening it may disturb sleep in some people.

Pairs well with

Folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with antidepressants, triptans, tramadol, St John's wort or 5-HTP without your doctor – risk of serotonin syndrome. Take care with Parkinson's medicines.

Watch out for

Not suitable with bipolar disorder (may trigger mania). In pregnancy, during psychiatric treatment or when taking medicines, consult your doctor; it is not a substitute for depression treatment.

Safety

May cause digestive upset, insomnia or restlessness; do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

SAMe is moisture-sensitive – keep tablets in the blister rather than in a pill organiser.
