Nicotinamide riboside

Also known as: NR, NAD+ precursor, a form of vitamin B3

Nicotinamide riboside is a form of vitamin B3 that the body turns into the coenzyme NAD+, important for energy production and DNA repair. NAD+ levels decline with age, which is why NR is studied as a supplement for healthy ageing.

What it is used for

  • Raising blood NAD+ levels – moderate evidence
  • Improving health, energy or ageing in humans – weak evidence, results so far are modest

Forms and how they differ

nicotinamide riboside chloride

the form authorised in the EU as a novel food

NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide)

a related NAD+ precursor with similarly limited evidence

NR + Q10 and other combinations

quality depends on the label

When to take it

In the morning, with or without food.

Pairs well with

Exercise, sleep and a protein-sufficient diet – these also raise NAD+.

Do not combine / separate

Do not combine with other high doses of vitamin B3 (niacin, nicotinamide).

Watch out for

Not suitable in pregnancy or while breastfeeding (insufficient data). With liver or kidney disease, cancer and when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

EFSA considers up to 300 mg a day safe for adults; do not exceed the label dose.

Practical tip

It is an expensive supplement with uncertain benefit – exercise and sleep remain the foundation.
