Molybdenum

Also known as: Mo, molybdate

Molybdenum is a trace element that is part of enzymes processing sulphur amino acids, purines and some compounds in the liver. It is found in legumes, grains and nuts, and deficiency is very rare on a normal diet.

What it is used for

  • contributes to normal sulphur amino acid metabolism – strong evidence for the function (EFSA-approved claim), but the benefit of supplementing a normal diet is small
  • "detox" support – weak evidence, a marketing claim without clinical trials

Forms and how they differ

glycinate (chelate)

well-tolerated capsule form

sodium molybdate

common form in multivitamins, well absorbed

in combinations with NAC and selenium

part of complexes; the benefit depends on the composition and doses on the label

When to take it

With food, any time of day.

Pairs well with

A varied diet with legumes and whole grains.

Do not combine / separate

High doses can reduce copper utilisation – avoid high doses without a reason.

Watch out for

With kidney disease, gout or copper metabolism disorders, consult your doctor. In pregnancy use only after agreeing with your doctor.

Safety

The Scientific Committee on Food (SCF/EFSA) set an upper limit of 600 µg molybdenum per day for adults (from all sources).

Practical tip

You rarely need molybdenum on its own – check how much your multivitamin already contains.
