Hyaluronic acid

Also known as: sodium hyaluronate, HA

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of skin, cartilage and joint fluid that binds large amounts of water. As a supplement it is taken for skin hydration and joint support, although it is partly broken down during digestion.

What it is used for

  • Skin hydration and elasticity – weak to moderate evidence from smaller studies
  • Knee pain relief – weak evidence when taken orally (injections are a different, medical treatment)
