Krill oil

Also known as: Antarctic krill oil

Oil from small marine crustaceans providing EPA and DHA bound mostly to phospholipids, plus the natural pigment astaxanthin. It usually delivers less omega-3 per dose than fish oil.

What it is used for

  • Lowering triglycerides – moderate evidence, depends on EPA+DHA dose
  • Better absorption than fish oil – weak evidence, differences are small
  • Joint discomfort relief – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

pure krill oil

phospholipid omega-3 with astaxanthin

krill + fish oil blend

more EPA and DHA at lower cost

When to take it

With food, once or twice daily.

Pairs well with

Vitamin D, a diet with regular fish.

Do not combine / separate

Be careful with other supplements affecting blood clotting.

Watch out for

Not suitable if you are allergic to shellfish or seafood. Caution with blood thinners. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney or liver disease or take any medicines.

Safety

EFSA's assessment of EPA+DHA up to 5 g per day combined applies; with krill oil, follow the label dose.

Practical tip

Compare price per 1 g of EPA+DHA – krill oil is usually much more expensive for the same omega-3.
