Alkylglycerols

Also known as: shark liver oil, ratfish liver oil

Alkylglycerols are lipids found abundantly in shark and ratfish (chimaera) liver oil, and in small amounts in breast milk. They are sold for immune support, but human evidence is limited.

What it is used for

  • immune support – weak evidence, mainly lab data and small studies
  • support during cancer treatment – no reliable evidence, not a substitute for treatment

Forms and how they differ

ratfish liver oil

contains alkylglycerols and omega-3; purity testing matters

shark liver oil

also contains squalene; quality and origin vary

When to take it

With a meal containing fat.

Pairs well with

A balanced diet, vitamin D, omega-3.

Do not combine / separate

Take care when combining with blood thinners and other fish oils.

Watch out for

Not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding due to lack of data. With fish allergy, autoimmune disease, cancer treatment or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Do not exceed the label dose; choose products tested for heavy metals and contaminants.

Practical tip

If omega-3 is your main goal, regular quality fish oil is better studied and cheaper.
