Carob

Also known as: carob powder, locust bean, Ceratonia siliqua

Carob is a powder made from ground carob pods with a naturally sweet taste, used as a cocoa substitute without caffeine or theobromine. It contains fibre and polyphenols; health benefits are only weakly supported.

What it is used for

  • caffeine-free cocoa substitute – food use
  • support for cholesterol thanks to fibre – weak evidence
  • easing diarrhoea – weak evidence, mainly traditional use

Forms and how they differ

roasted powder

stronger, cocoa-like taste

raw (unroasted) powder

milder, sweeter taste

locust bean gum (E410)

a seed thickener, a different product

When to take it

Any time, as part of a meal or drink.

Pairs well with

Plant milk, porridge, baking; as a cocoa substitute in evening drinks.

Do not combine / separate

The fibre may slow absorption of medicines – take larger amounts apart from medicines.

Watch out for

With diabetes, account for its natural sugars. During pregnancy and breastfeeding it is fine in food amounts; if you take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Considered safe in food amounts; larger amounts may cause bloating.

Practical tip

Carob is sweeter than cocoa – you can reduce added sugar in recipes.
