Cacao

Also known as: cocoa, cocoa flavanols, Theobroma cacao

Cacao comes from the seeds of the cacao tree and is rich in flavanols (epicatechin), magnesium and iron, and also contains theobromine and a little caffeine. In supplements it is often blended with functional mushrooms, collagen or maca.

What it is used for

  • supporting blood vessel elasticity and circulation – moderate evidence (EFSA-approved claim for cocoa flavanols at 200 mg flavanols per day)
  • slight reduction in blood pressure – weak to moderate evidence, the effect is small
  • mood and thinking – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

raw or non-alkalised cacao

retains more flavanols

alkalised (Dutch-process) cocoa

milder taste but far fewer flavanols

cocoa flavanol extract

precisely declared flavanol dose

blends (with mushrooms, collagen, MCT, maca)

content of cacao and other ingredients depends on the label; watch added sugar

When to take it

In the morning or before noon; in the evening it may disturb sleep in sensitive people (theobromine, caffeine).

Pairs well with

Milk or plant drink, cinnamon, functional mushrooms.

Do not combine / separate

Take care combining with other caffeine sources, blood thinners and MAOI antidepressants.

Watch out for

Moderation is wise with reflux, chocolate-triggered migraine, kidney stones (oxalates) and in pregnancy (caffeine). If you take medicines, consult your doctor.

Safety

Safe as food; cacao can contain cadmium and lead, so do not exceed the label dose and choose tested products.

Practical tip

Look for non-alkalised cacao and as little added sugar as possible on the label.
