Red clover

Also known as: Trifolium pratense

Red clover contains isoflavones (biochanin A, formononetin) with weak oestrogen-like activity, similar to soy isoflavones. It is used mainly for menopausal symptoms.

What it is used for

  • menopausal hot flushes – weak evidence, small effect and mixed results
  • bone density after menopause – weak evidence
  • blood vessel and cholesterol support – weak evidence

Forms and how they differ

isoflavone content in mg per serving is shown on the label

1:1 tincture

concentrated form; isoflavone content is often undeclared

flower tea

When to take it

With food; the effect is judged after 2–3 months.

Pairs well with

Calcium, vitamin D, exercise.

Do not combine / separate

Take care combining with blood thinners, hormone therapy, contraception and tamoxifen – consult your doctor.

Watch out for

Not suitable in pregnancy, breastfeeding or with hormone-sensitive conditions. With bleeding disorders, before surgery or when taking medicines, consult your doctor.
